The history of Rajadamnern Stadium, Bangkok

In 1941 the then Prime Minister Plaek Pibulsongkram gave the order to build a national Boxing Stadium. This should be able to present the tradition of Muay Thai and showcase the great sport. The Boxing Stadium was built in a prime location and also has this still today. It is located in close proximity to government buildings and on the grand avenue of Bangkok. The seat of the United Nations is located directly opposite. This also reflects the importance of Muay Thai in the Thai society again.

In the time of the second world war it was hard to find enough building materials, the completion of the Rajadamnern stage delayed until the year 1945, but then it went very quickly and the construction could be completed in just four months.

The former construction should remember to the amphitheater (Colosseum) in Rome and came in the first stage without roof.  This was also partly due to the Italian architectural firm Imprese Italiane All ‘Estero-Oriente, which was awarded the contract for construction.

The cost was at that time only 258,900 baht, which corresponds to about 5000 USD. In order to protect the spectators from the weather, it was decided to extend the construction to a roof six years after opening in 1951.

The building still exists to this day almost in its original form and has thereby obtained a special charm. Thus, the Rajadamnern Stadium in Bangkok is an integral part of Muay Thai culture and history.

Despite the “patina” the Rajadamnern Stadium is a popular starting point for Muay Thai friends from all over the world, especially the best Muay Thai fights on the earth take place here. The fights in the stadium are held in a separate ranking system to the Championship title in the weight classes up to the middleweight.
